#BlackwoodManor #AtoZChallenge - COMPLETE

Thursday, September 12, 2024 0 Comments

Did you visit for my A to Z Challenge and leave comments on any or all of the blog posts? If so, please contact me for your FREE copy. ( mysteeryann@outlook.com )

This has turned into book 1 of a series. As I wrote it, I knew there was more to the story of Blackwood Manor. It will be available on Amazon in the coming months (before the end of the year, it's already written and uploaded there, but I don't want to have too many releases in one month since I've been wrapping up a bunch of in progress books)

Ryan shrugged. He was a detective, not some home remodeling guru.
Suddenly, a faint sound caught their attention. Claire and Ryan exchanged a knowing look before following the sound to a hidden staircase leading down into the depths of the building.
With trepidation, they descended into the darkness, using their cell phone lights to cut through the shadows like knives. As they reached the bottom, they found themselves in a dimly lit chamber, its walls adorned with faded murals and cryptic symbols.
“What is this place?” Ryan muttered, his voice tinged with unease, looking at Oliver for answers.
Claire stepped forward, her eyes scanning the room for clues. “I think… I think this was where they performed the experiments. The ones Henry mentioned.”
“You spoke to Henry?” Oliver asked, sounding more than a bit concerned. He quickly changed his look and modified the sound of his voice. “What could that crazy old man possibly know?”
“Crazy?’ Ryan asked. “He sounded fully well to the both of us yesterday.” Ryan scratched the stubble on his chin. “How do you know him?”
“Doesn’t everyone?” Oliver asked with ease. “It’s been long rumored that he took care of this place, even well after it was abandoned.”
“How do you know that? You’re new to town.” Ryan felt the detective in him coming out.
“Again, doesn’t everyone know the tales of this place? Yes, I am an outsider, but I did my research before purchasing the asylum.” Oliver stated.
“If you did your research, why would you still want to buy? They gave up on selling this place decades ago.” Ryan stopped for an uneasy pause. “Matter of fact, they haven’t even had it listed for sale in ages, no sign in front, no internet listings…” He trailed off.

As they stepped inside, the musty smell of decay filled their nostrils, and the silence was deafening. Claire's footsteps echoed ominously in the empty corridors, while Ryan scanned the surroundings with a detective's trained eye.

“Do you feel that?” Claire whispered to Ryan, ignoring that Oliver was right next to them, her voice barely above a breath.

Ryan nodded, a furrow forming on his brow. “There’s something here, something… unsettling.”

Oliver let out an uncomfortable laugh. “Really, you must stop watching The Next 48.”

With a serious look, “I’ve never seen it.” Claire stated. Claire started walking down the hall to the right, not waiting to see if either would follow her.

“I assure you, there’s not much to see until I get the renovations done, and that, even with my finances, will take some time. Right now there’s peeling paint, dripping faucets, and stained and ripped carpet. Some ceilings are caving in, some fireplaces that I wonder if will ever work again.” Stopping mid-thought to look at Ryan, “Do fireplaces become outdated? Too old to safely work?” He asked.

“You’re home,” Claire said with a smile, ignoring the glare Oliver was sending her way.
“I am. You do realize this is a rather large place? That it might take a while for someone not standing near the door to get to the door?” Olver asked, seething with sarcasm and annoyance.
Ryan laughed.
Oliver and Claire both glared at him.
“What? It’s kind of funny.” Ryan shrugged. Why did everyone always have to be so uptight?
“I suppose you’d like to come in?” Oliver asked.
“We would. I have some questions.” Caire stated, already moving toward the opened door.
“You have questions? Isn’t your husband the detective? And, last I checked, there is no case or investigation surrounding Blackwood Manor.” Looking annoyed, Oliver allowed them to enter.
“No investigation,” Ryan assured.
“It’s more of my curiosity.” Claire stated. “It’s just been abandoned for so long and suddenly you appear. It’s rather odd. How did you find it? What brings you here?”

#AtoZChallenge - Blackwood Manor #Cozy Mystery - Part N #BlogBoost

Let's start with more apologies from me. I have no idea what my son brought home from work, but we have been so sick...it just will not go away. I am trying my best.

Rolling her eyes, Claire knocked loudly on the door. “What? It’s a huge place, I have to make sure he hears us.” Claire shrugged as Ryan stared at her.

“A bit aggressive,” Ryan stated. When it was clear that Claire wasn’t going to give a response, he continued. “Don’t you think?”

Claire shot a look toward Ryan and, once again, knocked loudly on the huge door. “Even the door seems sad and secretive,” Claire remarked.

Before Ryan could be sarcastic, the door whipped open, and out of breath, Oliver glared at them.
