Raised in a hostile environment where abuse occurs daily, David attempts to break the mold and befriends the slave, Jenkins, owned by his Pa. Fighting against extraordinary times and beliefs, David leads Jenkins to freedom with no regard for his own safety and possible consequences dealt out by his Pa. Suggested age for readers: 8-12
My Review: This book is a short story that comes around the time of the Underground Railroad. David is a caring boy who, unlike his father, feels that slavery is wrong. David becomes friends with their slave, Jenkins after trying to gain his trust. In the end, the compassion and help from young boy, helps another to escape slavery.
A great book that shows friendship and compassion even in children. I'm happy to add it to my children's reading shelves.
