Rachelle Paige Campbell - Match Made in Montana #AuthorInterview

Tuesday, November 05, 2024 0 Comments

Tell us about your latest book.

Match Made in Montana is the boxset of all three books in the series. A sweet, contemporary romance trilogy set on a ranch outside a small town in Montana featuring a cast of quirky, close-knit characters. These books are hope-filled and heart-felt stories that share the theme the best is yet to come

What are you currently reading?

I love to read Jenny Holiday, Christina Lauren, Jesse Q. Sutanto, and Rebecca Yarros. All of these ladies have new releases this year so I’m reading all of them (or re-reading Fourth Wing and Iron Flame).

Tell us 3 interesting things about you.

I’m not athletic at all but seem to keep getting rope into athletic events (a mudrun over the summer, pickleball). I lived in London for a year while I earned my master’s degree and the experience really set me up for the path I’m on now. I was an antique appraiser at an auction house for several years.

Describe your workspace.

I used to work in a closet in my laundry room but was upgraded to a corner of my husband’s office. My desk and bookshelf are in between two windows. I love the natural light but miss closing the door on my mess when I leave.

What’s your favorite quote?

Comparison is the killer of joy.

What is the best thing and the worst thing, to you, about being an author?

The best thing about being an author is using my imagination but that can be the hardest thing too. Sometimes ideas/solutions are difficult to find.

Any advice for new writers?

Decide what success looks like for you or you will never be happy. You’ll be chasing something impossible.

Do you listen to music while you read? If so, what’s on your playlist?

I prefer quiet while reading so I can focus on the story.

What author, past or present, would you most like to meet and get to speak with?

I’d love to chat with Rebecca Yarros because I think she’s amazing and kind.

What is one genre you’d love to write in, yet haven’t tried yet? Will you be giving it a try?

I’ve never written historical romance. I fell in love with romance books because of regency set novels. I’m always up to give something a try! I think this would be a fun challenge.

While we’re talking….here are a few Quickies:

What’s first: plot, world or characters? Plot

Who leads: your or characters? Me

Sleep in or up early? Up early

Favorite part of a book: beginning, middle or end? Beginning!

Dogs or cats? Dogs

Coffee or tea? Coffee

TV or Movies?  TV

Spring or fall?  Fall

Indoors or outdoors?  Outdoors

Meat or vegetables?  Vegetables

Julie Castle - Tangled Tales #AuthorInterview

Monday, November 04, 2024 0 Comments

Tell us about your latest book.

My Tangled Tales Series is coming out, and I hope you love this fun take on fairy tales.

What are you currently reading?

I have a mile-long list, but I’m reading Big Bad Boss by Renee Rose and Lee Savino.

Tell us 3 interesting things about you.

I love art, exploring museums, and painting. I love to travel, mainly cross-country Amtrak trips and cruises. And I love Alaska and Bermuda.

Describe your workspace.

My office is cozy with my trusty PC and Printer. I have a lovely view of the woods behind my house and a few books covers and awards on the wall. I won the IDA for Best Romantic Suspense for Bound To Serve.

What’s your favorite quote?

“There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.” —Somerset Maugham

What is the best thing and the worst thing, to you, about being an author?

I’m adventurous and tend to jump into things. I always think I can make things work, but sometimes I just can’t

Any advice for new writers?

Join a writing group and follow your muse.

Do you listen to music while you read? If so, what’s on your playlist?

Yes, I do. I like to put soothing new-age music on in the background to help me get into the zone.

What author, past or present, would you most like to meet and get to speak with?

Agatha Christy and Renee Rose. How’s that for a combo?

What is one genre you’d love to write in, yet haven’t tried yet? Will you be giving it a try?

I would love to write a mystery. I’ve wanted to for years, and I probably will.

While we’re talking….here are a few Quickies:

What’s first: plot, world or characters? Characters. I am not a plotter.

Who leads: your or characters? My characters, of course. I usually start with an opening line or situation and then it’s go time.

Sleep in or up early? Sleep in. I’m a night owl.

Favorite part of a book: beginning, middle or end? The beginning. It’s so much fun to begin a new adventure.

Dogs or cats? But my cat Mr. Fluffy says cats.

Coffee or tea? Both. Coffee in the morning and tea in the afternoon.

TV or Movies? Movies

Spring or fall? Spring

Indoors or outdoors? A little bit of both, please.

Meat or vegetables? Veggies.

Stephanie R. Caffrey - London Detective Agency #AuthorInterview

Wednesday, October 09, 2024 0 Comments

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?

JR Ward, Emily Henry, John Green

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?

They’re not super important. I choose names based on how they sound, and then I use a name randomizer on the internet for last names based on their ethnicity.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

My children

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I would love to be able to write full-time, with several books out in the world.

What do you think most characterizes your writing?

I think the humor I infuse really characterizes my writing. I write suspense, but my characters tend to be really funny. I grew up in a house with humor infused in everything, and my husband and I tend to use humor a lot, and I found that I really wanted my books to reflect that. Which is why even if my main characters aren’t always funny, there is a side character who is that person. You have to have some sort of levity when things start to get serious.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Finding time. I’m a mom to two children, so finding time to sit down and write has become a precious commodity. Before kids, I could write whenever, but with a ten and four year old, finding time to sit down uninterrupted to write is very rare.

Are there underrepresented groups or ideas featured if your book?  If so, discuss them.

Tessa in Be My Little Baby is Latina. I am Mexican-American, my grandmother immigrated to the United States in the 1950s and I have a lot of family still living in Mexico. It has become important to me to see more heroines in books who look like me. Where they are proud of their Latin heritage, even if they don’t look Latina, or speak the language, or that is only part of their heritage. I always get surprised looks when I tell people I’m Mexican-American, and so writing my experience into books has been important to me and Tessa is my first, but by no means my last, character like this.

Are there misconceptions that people have about your book?  If so, explain.

I haven’t heard anyone having any misconceptions about the book.

Rachelle Paige Campbell - Unmasking a Cowgirl #AuthorInterview

Thursday, September 05, 2024 1 Comments

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?

I grew up on Jane Austen and Lucy Maud Montgomery. Both of these women wrote contemporary stories that centered on female characters and really empowered readers (including me).

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name-choosing resources you recommend?

Names are important because they can hint at a character before the reader gets to know them. My go-to resource is always the social security administration website because I can look up popular baby names for the year each character was born. This is really important in contemporary romance as I get older but my heroines seem to get younger.

For the Match Made in Montana series, I took special care to think about last names too. The founding families needed strong monikers that hinted at old East Coast wealth and I think I nailed it with Hawke, Kincaid, and Whittier.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

My best accomplishment is taking chances. In my life, I seize every opportunity I can—even if it scares me. The growth in myself, my writing, my personal life has all come to being brave and putting myself out there.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years, I hope I’m still publishing new stories and have watched an adaptation of at least one of my books into a film. In my personal life, my husband and I will be empty nesters. I hope we’re traveling a lot, too.

What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has? Write it out here, then answer it.

What took you so long to write a Western romance?

Some of the most popular sweet, contemporary romances, my subgenre, are set in the West with ranches and cowboys. I had a hard time finding the “right” hero for a book that readers would love but still be true to my brand. I don’t write stubborn, alpha males. When I started brainstorming, I found Ryan, Ted, and Joe, three heroes who are kind and thoughtful and the books came easily after that.

What do you think most characterizes your writing?

I think my writing is most characterized by the community of secondary characters that support, challenge, and encourage the main characters. No one lives in a bubble in one of my books. I love writing small towns because I live in a close-knit suburb where friends look out for each other.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

The hardest part of writing this book was knowing it would be the last in the series. I’ve become very fond of Herd, Montana and its inhabitants and wasn’t ready to say goodbye. I hope readers will enjoy the snippets of the previous couples’ happily ever after endings and find a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

In Unmasking A Cowgirl, I was able to tie up loose ends from the previous two books. When I sat down to write the book, I flew through the first draft. In edits, I found the heart of the story. I most enjoyed the resolutions in this book.

John Evans - Midnight Falls #AuthorInterview

Wednesday, September 04, 2024 0 Comments

Tell us about your latest book.

Midnight Falls is my debut novel, and very much written in the same style as the books that inspired it, that is to say, early Stephen King in that 70s and 80s pulp horror style. Many of the advanced readers have called it, "Salem's Lot" but with werewolves".

A young man and his dog return to his small hometown only to find that the friendly facade remembered from childhood hides a sinister evil. Upon discovering this secret he is forced to choose to either stop running from his problem and face it, or keep running for the rest of his life. Anyone and everyone could be a monster hiding behind the mask of small-town hospitality, knowing who to trust is hard especially when butting heads with the town sheriff who has a grudge against him and an axe to grind, and no intentions of burying it unless maybe his back. The story is told in flashback before the grizzly conclusion, a not-so-classical story of a boy and his dog.

Midnight Falls is a unique take on the werewolf genre, exploring the theme of identity, feeling like an outsider in a place once called home, and choosing how to deal with a negative self-image and doubt that shapes us into who we are.

What are you currently reading?

Ironically, I am currently rereading Salem's Lot, having just read an article stating that the remake of the iconic mini-series has been shelved indefinitely(at this time) and will not be released.

Tell us 3 interesting things about you.

I retired after three years as a PMC(Mercenary) became a BEA(Bounty Hunter) and for a while was a professional Model.

Describe your workspace.

Pure unadulterated chaos. Originally, it was a guest room that was planned to be turned into a home office/gym. It became a sort of extra storage space where extra stuff was crammed to get it out of the way. So I started out sitting on packing boxes and the like, before slowly moving in a desk, chair, and a cot where I can nap after pulling an all-nighter.
It's cozy(totally not cramped or anything) and keeps me out of the way of adults who are doing adult things.

What’s your favorite quote?

So many good ones, but since we are talking about writing I would have to go with one of two quotes by Hemmingway. Either "Writing is easy, all you have to do is sit at the typewriter and bleed" or "The first draft of anything is shit."

What is the best thing and the worst thing, to you, about being an author?

It's got to be coming up with the idea for a story. Every writer loves the idea of a story. It's fun to brainstorm and fantasize about your plot and characters and work on the story in your head. It's endlessly enjoyable. However, eventually, you have to stop daydreaming and transcribe the story in your head onto the page. This is the difficult part because not only is it actual work, but as many writers have experienced something gets lost in the translation. The story in your head is ALWAYS better than the story on the page. Others never even make it that far, and endlessly dream about a book that will never be written.
It's said that everyone has a book in them, but very few manage to complete the arduous task of actually writing one.

Any advice for new writers?

There is no one correct way to write...there are however a hell of a lot of wrong ways to do it. All you can do is try to figure out what works for you. Most importantly write for yourself and write the kinds of books you want to read. The industry is an absolute mess and geared against most writers, and in the end few people "make it". Set your own goals and define your own success that way in the end YOU will have something that YOU are proud of.
If you enjoy it, your readers will too.

Do you listen to music while you read? If so, what’s on your playlist?

Yes, I do. Mostly it's a mixture of 70s and 80s rock music ranging from such bands as The Eagles, Journey, Blondie, Pat Benatar, Billy Idol, The Scorpians, Twisted Sister, AC/DC. It's less about setting a mood and more about letting me just zone out so my brain and work on writing.

What author, past or present, would you most like to meet and get to speak with?

Ray Bradbury, he was one of the few authors I grew up reading and loving that I never got to meet. When he passed away in 2012 I even wrote a short story in his style in honor of his death and the work he did.

What is one genre you’d love to write in, yet haven’t tried yet? Will you be giving it a try?

I wouldn't say never, but while I probably will not try it because it's not in my writing style, I would say Scifi Fantasy. The kind that blends Sword and Sorcery with Spaceships and Aliens. Stuff like: Masters of the Universe, Zardoz, Barbarella, and Flash Gordon.

What’s first: plot, world or characters?

Plot. I get a random idea and chase it until it grows into something like a plot.

Who leads: your or characters?

The Characters. Writers who try to control their characters, the story itself suffers for it.

Sleep in or up early?

Sleep in, sleep late, sleep a lot.

Favorite part of a book: beginning, middle or end?

Depends. If I am reading, I like them all. If I am writing, it's a toss-up between the ending or the beginning, I HATE writing the middle.

Dogs or cats?

I like them both, but my writing would suggest dogs.

Coffee or tea?

Mountain Dew

TV or Movies?

Probably TV, I love a short limited series that is gripping or an anthology.

Spring or fall?

Fall. Less pollen.

Indoors or outdoors?

Indoor. I spent most of my childhood working outside on the farm, and then my early professional adult career. I love Air Conditioning and indoor plumbing.

Meat or vegetables?

I know vegetables are important, but I like my proteins.

Stephanie R. Caffrey - Be My Little Baby #AuthorInterview

Friday, August 09, 2024 0 Comments

What does your writing process look like?

I’m a planster, so I do a little planning and then I let my muse and characters take me away. Before starting a book, I will do some research about what I’m writing, for example for Be My Little Baby I did a lot of research into British Baked Goods and CCTV footage. And then I’ll develop my characters really well. I have several character sheets I fill out answering all sorts of questions about them, and really digging into who they are. That way, as I’m writing I know how my characters would act in every given scenario. After my draft is finished, I give it a rough edit, and then send it to three beta readers. These are people who will read the book and then critique it deeply. They will find my plot holes, they will tell me what does and doesn’t work. And once I get the book back from all three people, I will do my deep edit on it.

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

I can’t listen to music with lyrics while I write, but I can’t write in absolute silence either, so I either listen to instrumentals or I’ll listen to songs in Spanish, since I don’t speak Spanish, but the rhythm of Spanish music really helps the words come out.

What book do you wish you could have written?

Jane Eyre one of the original romantic suspense books.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

Domhnall Gleeson as James

Jamila Velasquez as Tessa

What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has? Write it out here, then answer it.

Is Tessa, or any of your heroines, a self-insert based on you? The answer is not really. While they have some aspects of my personality, they’re not fully based on me.

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing since I was probably in about fourth grade. I’ve always had this urge to get words on paper and tell stories.

What kind(s) of writing do you do?

In addition to writing romantic suspense novels, I write fanfiction in very niche fandoms. I also maintain a book review blog where I not only share what books I read every month, I also read and review ARCs.

Can you share some stories about people you met while researching this book?

In my fanfiction days, I was very involved in the Harry Potter community. After I finished my first draft of my first London Detective Agency book, Mistaken Identity, I decided I really needed it to be BritPicked, aka have a British person read it and make sure my British characters read as British. I put feelers out in a Discord group I was in, and I found Louise. Louise has been my BritPicker since 2018. She has read both Mistaken Identity and Be My Little Baby and really helped this American out. She’s become a dear friend.

Author Bio:

Julie Castle is a natural-born romantic with a modicum of artistic talent inherited from her mom and a love for telling tall tales she got from her dad. That set her up for being a starving artist, the biggest fibber in the world, or a romance author. She’s so glad she chose the latter. She's always had a love affair with the written word. As a child growing up in a small town, she loved visiting the local library, a converted gilded age mansion, and getting lost between the pages of a book. The drafty old mansion could be a spooky place, but she still loved it. She enjoyed poking into behind the scenes areas she wasn't supposed to venture into. She's still the same way, which is why she loves writing romance with an edge, paranormal, suspenseful, super sexy, or just laugh your pants off funny. She resides in Wisconsin with her family.

Rachelle Paige Campbell - Catch a Cowboy #AuthorInterview

What does your writing process look like?

My writing process starts and ends with a lot of thinking time. What that looks like to my husband (we share an office) is me staring at a wall, starting a conversation, and then racing to type/talk into my phone/write on paper. I like to build in time for each step (outline, first draft, edits) to think through the story. Without the time, I miss key elements I wanted to add to the plot or characterization.

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

My strangest writing habit might be dictation into my phone while I walk. I put on my sunglasses and a hat and stride down the sidewalk outside my front door. Everyone in my neighborhood knows I write so they are all used to me talking to myself as I get my steps in.

What book do you wish you could have written?

I don’t have too many wish I could have moments in my life. But, years ago, I remember a TV movie about a girl who went on a Christian dating site and ended up matching with a pastor. It was such a fun idea, I would have loved to write it.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?

For Catch A Cowboy, I’d love Hollywood to cast Hailee Steinfeld as Stephanie and Jensen Ackles as Ted. I think they would have great chemistry on camera and Hailee has the laugh at herself charm needed to play Stephanie.

What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has? Write it out here, then answer it.

Did any books or movies inspire you while writing this book?

I grew up on The Thorn Birds, the TV mini-series based on Colleen McCullough’s epic book. I really mean grew up. The show premiered when I was a toddler and I think we watched it every year on VHS. I live in a suburb outside of Chicago. I have limited real-life experience with a ranch. But I have a lot of memories of Drogheda and in many ways that ranch inspired the Kincaid ranch in my Match Made in Montana series. In fact, there is a pivotal scene in Catch A Cowboy that is directly inspired by The Thorn Birds and fans will spot it instantly.

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

I have loved books for as long as I can remember. I credit this to my mom. She used to read to me as a child (although she’d sneak out after she read to me before naptime) and I grew up seeing her read. It’s not summer to me unless I have a plastic covered library hardback just like my mom.

How long have you been writing?

I’m the boring, been writing since childhood, person. My mom has tons of my old stories saved. In college, I started writing fan fiction for Pride and Prejudice. I used to frequent the website Shades of Pemberley and read (but I never got up the nerve to post). I didn’t start writing to publish until I’d had my second child. I realized I couldn’t tell them to chase their dreams if I wasn’t willing to do the same.

What kind(s) of writing do you do?

The majority of my time is devoted to writing fiction and mostly in novel-length. Over the past couple of years, I’ve dabbled with serializations and short stories. But I always come back to a full-length book.

Kincaid Ranch’s lead cowboy, Ted Stirling, isn’t looking for romance or entanglements. He settled in Herd, Montana over a decade ago after a devastating loss. He’s seeking comfort and friendship. Nothing more. If he was going to try for love again, he would pick someone sweet and sunny, exactly like kindergarten teacher, Stephanie Patricks. But she’s too young for him.

Stephanie has nursed a crush on quiet, handsome Ted for years. Unfortunately, every time she’s around him, she gets tongue-tied. She only seems to be able to find her words when she’s working with her students. When Ted’s sister unexpectedly arrives in town with his five-year-old niece in tow, he needs help, and Stephanie is just the woman to provide it.

A sudden emergency puts into sharp focus exactly how fragile life is, and Ted needs to decide whether to open his heart again, or let love slip away forever.

What does your writing process look like?

I like to write in the morning and edit in the afternoon. And I’m strictly a pantser, not a plotter.

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?

I went to a psychic once who told me I should write outside, so when I need to free the muse, I head out on the patio or go to the park to write. It works for me.

Why did you choose to write in your particular field or genre?

If you write more than one, how do you balance them? I started to write romance because that’s what I love to read, and as I continued on my writing path erotic romance just spoke to me. I always go where my heart leads me.

Where did your love of books/storytelling/reading/writing/etc. come from?

First of all, as a child I lived close to the library, so I used to hang out there and gorge myself on fun reads. Second, I come from a long line of story tellers.

How long have you been writing?

I started when my grandma loved a poem I wrote in third grade, but I’ve been seriously at it for about twenty-three years.

Julie Castle - 4 R's Series #AuthorInterview

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

Publishing my first book taught me to keep going and believe in myself. If you keep doubting yourself and going over the same thing, you’re never going to move forward.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

I have six partly finished books waiting for me to finish telling their stories. One of them has been speaking to me lately so stay tuned.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Getting into the mindset of a man. They communicate differently. Once you crack that code, you’re all set.

What period of your life do you find you write about most often? (child, teenager, young adult)

I definitely talk about young and mature adults.

How do you select the names of your characters?

The names come to me as I’m writing the scenes.  Some names just fit if you know what I mean.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yes, I do because I’ve experienced it. It’s not fun, and it’s such a relief when it lifts.

Are your characters inspired by real people?

As a matter of fact, they are a combination of many of the people I meet. So be careful, you may wind up in one of my books.
