Book Review: Emma and the Vampires

Summary from GoodReads:
What better place than pale England to hide a secret society of gentlemen vampires?

In this hilarious retelling of Jane Austen's Emma, screenwriter Wayne Josephson casts Mr. Knightley as one of the most handsome and noble of the gentlemen village vampires. Blithely unaware of their presence, Emma, who imagines she has a special gift for matchmaking, attempts to arrange the affairs of her social circle with delightfully disastrous results. But when her dear friend Harriet Smith declares her love for Mr. Knightley, Emma realizes she's the one who wants to stay up all night with him. Fortunately, Mr. Knightley has been hiding a secret deep within his unbeating heart-his (literal) undying love for her... A brilliant mash-up of Jane Austen and the undead.

My Review: Have you ever watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer {Yeah, me either, but I've had the unfortunate experience to see commercials} -- well, this is sort of Emma.

There's some funny parts to the book and I, for some reason, found it completely funny when the girls of the town are being stalked by vampires and Emma decides to add a stake as part of her *underskirt* attire.

If you've read the original classic, it was definitely a twist to add in paranormal. Did I prefer it this way? To be honest, I'm not sure. While it wasn't a bad read and it was entertaining and funny at parts, I still love my classics.

The characters do come alive in the book, which is what really helps balance out that this is a changed over classic book {yes, I'm still stuck on how the book was originally written}. However, it is a fast read once you can get past how it was originally done.

A must pick up for anyone that enjoys the mash-ups that are becoming popular in today's books.

  1. This sounds very funny. With Emma matchmaking a vampire? I wonder how the vampire feels about that? We know how he feels about her, but still, I doubt any vampire needs any matchmaking for him. lol I wonder where the girls hid the stakes. Sounds uncomfortable to say the least. Great interview!
